Sophie emerged from the bathroom, hair wet, and wearing sweatpants and a tank top. She pointed at the phone Liv held in her hands. “When’s the last time you slept?”

“I don’t know,” Liv said with a sigh. Her mouth went dry at the sight of Sophie fresh from the shower, her tank top clinging to her beautiful body. She looked at her phone before setting it on the bedside table. “Hal just called. Victor didn’t commit suicide.”

“You aren’t surprised, are you?”

“No.”

“You think his murder and the kidnappings are connected?”

“Yes. Victor was killed to keep us occupied or because he saw something he shouldn’t have. It’s all a little too coincidental.”

“Then it has to be someone who knows who we are, because Justin’s Toyota doesn’t exactly scream FBI. They were waiting for him.”

“It could have been any one of us.” She didn’t want to lead Sophie down any one path so she didn’t say anything to indicate where her thoughts were. “Victor was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. It wouldn’t make any sense for our perp to draw attention to himself by killing a federal agent. Victor had to have stumbled onto something.”

“It was rather odd Mansfield was there at the scene, isn’t it?” Sophie focused her attention to Liv’s face, and Liv nodded. “He was bored trailing Kraft so he veered off to check on the call about a dead body?”

“I wondered that same thing this morning. His story was plausible though. The school where Kraft works really isn’t very far from the motel, and he would have driven right past it.”

“Why was he the one tailing Kraft in the first place? I get the impression he thinks he’s too good for menial work like that. Why wouldn’t he have delegated the surveillance to someone else?”

Liv felt her heart speed up as she realized they were on the same wavelength. It was always exhilarating to know you weren’t the only one having doubts about someone. Usually she had these conversations with Justin, but it was equally invigorating to be talking things through with Sophie.

“You don’t think Mansfield could have murdered Victor, do you?” Sophie asked after a few moments.

“I don’t want to think it, but how can I not?” Liv ran a hand through her hair and sighed. “He’s there with Victor’s body when Justin and I arrive, and then while we’re all busy with a suicide that turns out to be a homicide—and no one’s watching Kraft—Timmy York is seen alive and someone calls his parents saying his body was found at virtually the same location. What are we missing? And where the hell is Mansfield now? He disappeared right in the middle of everything today after ignoring my explicit instructions to put a tail on Kraft again. It’s too convenient.”

“I understand what you’re saying, and yes, the man’s an ass, but that doesn’t make him guilty of a crime, does it? What would be the motive?”

“Unless he’s involved in the kidnappings, I can’t see a motive for murdering a federal agent,” Liv said tiredly.
